The General Manager of Odion Cinemas, United Kingdom, Mr. Kene Mkparu, has revealed that the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood, is not yet a force to reckon with in the global market.

In a recent interview with NollywoodReel, the UK-based exhibition specialist said although Nollywood has been impressive, it needs to slightly change and appeal not just to Africans but white people as well.

“The Nigerian movie industry is absolutely impressive as it is. It is getting to a stage where it needs to get to the next level - the global stage. It needs to slightly change and appeal not just to us, the blacks, but to the white people as well.

“And it is a very little thing that we need to do to get there because we are already doing great jobs. Once we get the format and quality of our films right and also let the storyline appeal to the white audience, definitely the level will change,” Kene said.

He, however, opined that with the impressive efforts being made by Andrien Gbinijie’s Atlantic Overseas Company, Nollywood will get to the global level in the next 18 months.

Speaking further on the notion that Nollywood is the biggest in the world, the Anambra State-born dude said Nollywood as at the end of 2006 was recorded to be producing about 1,000 films per year, while Hollywood and Bollywood are producing 400/500 and 800 respectively.

“So, it is simple mathematics, Nollywood is the biggest, even if a lot of what we produce are rubbish. We are the biggest in terms of production quantity, but in terms of revenue generation, we are nowhere. We are significant in African standard, but by global standard, we have not touched anything,” he said.
