Introduction

Once upon a time, over twenty-eight years ago, somewhere in Mogadishu, Somalia, a woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The child was given the name Mohammed.

Three years earlier, in 1980, somewhere in Ghana, another woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The child was named Kweku.

At the age of eight, Mohammed left Djibouti (where he was based after his birth) for England to join his father Mr. Farah who was based in the UK at the time. Likewise Kweku also came to England at the age of eleven in 1991.

Life in England and Education:

Mo (as he was later called) attended Feltham Community College in London where he struggled academically, but excelled athletically.

Kweku on the other hand attended Ackworth School, a private boarding school where he excelled academically. He was appointed the Head Boy of the school in his final year. Kweku later attended the University of Nottingham, where he obtained a degree in e-commerce and digital business.

Achievements

After their education, their careers took different paths.

Mo became a long distance runner specialising in the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres races. At the commencement of his career, Mo was an average runner achieving an average placing of seventh in various races at the European and World Athletic Championships between 2005 and 2009.

Three years after graduating from University, Kweku Adoboli secured a job at the blue chip Swiss investment bank UBS. Kweku was very hard-working and extremely intelligent. Within a couple of years of joining UBS in 2006, he rose through the ranks eventually attaining a position as a Director of ETF Trading, earning a seven digit pay packet. Kweku was well loved by his colleagues and was a star trader.

What Kweku achieved in the trading room of UBS, Mo began to achieve on the racing tracks of Europe. Between 2009 and 2010, Mo Farah won three gold medals at the 3,000 metres, 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres events of the European Athletics Championships.

Worldwide Fame

The year 2011 was a watershed year for these two hard-working Britons of African descent as the year brought them worldwide attention.

At the 2011 World Athletics Championship, which took place in South Korea, Mo competed in the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres events. Mo won a silver medal at the 10,000 metres event and his crowning moment came on the 4th of September 2011 when he won the 5,000 metres race beating America’s Bernard Lagat. By this feat, Mo Farah became the first British athlete to win a global gold medal at 5,000 metres and a medal over 10,000 metres.

Exactly eleven days later on 15 September 2011, Kweku Adoboli was catapulted onto the world stage as it was revealed that he was alleged to have lost his employer $2bn as a result of a rogue trade. The amount lost by Kweku was the biggest loss ever accrued by a single trader in British financial history. Kweku made headline news all over the world and his face was adorned on the front pages of the tabloids, the broadsheets and the financial newspapers. Kweku was eventually arrested and has been charged with fraud. As at the time of writing, he is yet to be convicted.

Analysis

Mo and Kweku are both British citizens who have spent 70% and 64% of their lives respectively in England. They are also products of the British sports and financial institutions respectively in addition to the British educational system. Although they are of African descent, they are British by culture, citizenry and fame.

However, at the peak of their fame, one notices an asymmetric treatment of their recognition as Britons. While most people have recognized Mo as British, the reverse is the case for Kweku who has been widely described as African.

To illustrate my point, I highlight below references in the press to both Kweku and Mo at the peak of their fame:

"04 September 2011 to 05 September 2011

“Great Britain's Mo Farah crosses the finish line to win the 5,000m title at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu” - AP

“Few British athletes have sacrificed more to win, and he was elated with what he had achieved” - Guardian

“Mo Farah claims place among British all-time greats with World title triumph” - Daily Mirror

“Brendan Foster believes Mo Farah is Britain's greatest ever long distance runner” - Daily Mail

“'Patience, patience, patience'. Those were the last words of advice Mo Farah received from his American coach, Alberto Salazar, before he went to the start line for his 5,000 metres final. Britain must give thanks that the Londoner is a good listener” - Daily Telegraph

“MO FARAH became the first Brit to win a global 5,000m title and then roared: ‘Bring on 2012’"- The Sun

And here are comments from a number of blogs:

“well done for all in Britain”

“Mo got the tactics just right in the 5k. Up there with the best of British distance running and a great guy.”

On Kweku (15 September 2011 to 16 September 2011)

“From Ghana to the City: the rise of a trader who had it all”- The Telegraph

“Adoboli, British-educated and of Ghanaian descent, did not enter pleas to the charges when they were set out at the magistrates court”.- Guardian

“The Ghanaian, who was privately educated in Britain and is the son of a retired UN worker, is accused of being responsible for the biggest loss ever accrued by a single trader based in London” - Daily Mail

“Adoboli appeared before City of London Magistrates' Court this afternoon. During the fifteen minute hearing, the well-built Ghanaian was handed a tissue from the clerk as he wiped a tear away” - The Sun

“Vickers, silver-haired and a knighted academic, is a far cry from the 31-year-old party-loving Adoboli of African origin. Still, they are in the spotlight this week and inextricably linked.”- Business Standard

“Educated at an exclusive school in a picturesque patch of English countryside, Ghana-born trader Kweku Adoboli was known to neighbours as a polite and well-dressed young man who mixed gruelling hours in London's financial district with a lavish social life in the capital's nightspots.” – AP

And here are comments from a number of blogs:

“Thought so when I heard his name, looks Nigerian, fraud and scams are endemic to these people, I always used to tell my clients never accept payment from Nigeria except in hard cash.”

“The bank that trusts a Nigerian employee (Kweku Adoboli) with money is a bank that's about to go out of business rapidly.”

Conclusion

As the saying goes, “success has many fathers, while failure is an orphan”.

Could this explain why Mo Farah is referred to as British while the public forgets his Somalian roots and why Kweku Adoboli is referred to as Ghanaian, Nigerian or African and his British affiliation is easily forgotten?

Would Kweku have been referred to as Ghanaian and not British if he won the Nobel Prize for Economics? Would Kweku have been referred to as African and not British if he found the cure for cancer? Would Kweku have been referred to as Ghanaian born and not British if he won the Olympics 100 metres final?

Or would Mo have been referred to as British and not Somali if he was found to be a terrorist? Would Mo have been referred to as British and not African if he failed a drug test? Would Mo have been referred to as British and not Somali born if he was a serial killer?

It is time for Britons of African descent or Africans of British birth to be recognized as either Africans or Britons irrespective of success or failure, fame or notoriety, good or evil; after all, Brits of Jewish descent are recognized as Brits; Brits of Australian descent are recognized as Brits.

The Ambassador who failed Anthem test

TWENTY-FIVE nominees for ambassadorial posting appeared before the Senate a fortnight ago for confirmation hearings. But one of them named Ijeoma Bris...

TWENTY-FIVE nominees for ambassadorial posting appeared before the Senate a fortnight ago for confirmation hearings. But one of them named Ijeoma Bristol, in certain reports and Mrs Ijeoma Chinyere elsewhere, wife of a serving Nigerian envoy, and herself, a career diplomat was the focus of attention. She caused quite an uproar when she was asked to recite the Nigerian national anthem and the national pledge. Thrice she was asked, thrice she failed. Senator Jubril Aminu, the chair of the Senate committee on Foreign Affairs was said to have remarked out of surprise, that "this is not a joke, there is a problem." Indeed, there was a problem. For, when the woman was later asked to list correctly, means of diplomatic communication, her answer was "Notes and memoranda." More laughter; more incredulity. She was also asked to name the capital of Jigawa state. She kept mute. She apparently has never heard of Jigawa state. But where the real problem lies is that the woman's nomination has now been confirmed and she will soon travel abroad as Her Excellency, the Nigerian Ambassador to wherever.

If Mrs Bristol's poor performance is unbelievable, the justifications for her endorsement by the Senate are absolutely shocking. The Chair of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee is quoted as having advised that Mrs Bristol "should go and learn about Nigeria first". I think he is right. But he says "I was in the minority". The leader of the opposition, Olorunnimbe Mamora (ACN, Lagos state) also protested that "we cannot continue to allow mediocrity...It is not helping us, we cannot allow this lady pass." But most of the Senators wanted the lady to pass. Why? The given answer is this: "because she is a career diplomat and next in line for the position." What is that? The leadership of the Senate also supported her. Senate President David Mark asked that the Senate should "temper justice with mercy...her case is a case of what we call poor pass." Really? I thought she failed the test, not once but five times! The Senate President also reportedly said he is optimistic that "if given the opportunity, Mrs Bristol would learn about Nigeria." Hey, please!
If she did not learn about Nigeria while serving as a career diplomat inside Nigeria, for so many years, is it when she is representing Nigeria? How is she going to learn about Nigeria as head of a diplomatic mission? Wonky logic, sir. But not to worry: Nigerian leaders get to positions of authority usually terribly unprepared: they learn on the job and this is apparent in the way they embarrass us daily. One Nigerian Foreign Minister once went to an AU meeting to tell a story about Catholic marriages at a plenary session, and thinking that his audience enjoyed his rigmarole, he launched into a longer tale about the tortoise! What is worse in the Bristol case is that some of the senators reportedly argued that she should be confirmed for the job "so that she can retire as an ambassador." These justifications provide enough basis for a recommendation that Mrs Bristol's confirmation should be reversed, and the process of her confirmation investigated. Persons should not be appointed as the country's ambassadors, just because it is nice for them to retire as ambassadors, or because they are next in line for the job. If our Senators had been watching C-SPAN closely, they would have learnt that a confirmation hearing is a very serious business and that there are minimum standards for the appointment of a country's ambassadors.

Mrs Bristol is a career diplomat. Diplomacy is even for her "a family business" , her husband being a diplomat too, and so in many years of her association with diplomacy and foreign affairs, she has not been able to learn modes of diplomatic communications? "Notes and memoranda," she said. Is she a secretarial staff in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, being described falsely as a career diplomat? In this country, anything is possible. If she had been reading the Wikileaks reports on Nigeria for example, she would at least have had an idea. On what basis really is she being sent abroad as an ambassador? Suppose she gets to wherever and the Nigerian national anthem is being played and she cannot recognize it? Or a curious diplomat approaches her and starts a conversation about the crisis in Plateau and Bauchi? She would just smile? Allowing her to pass on the grounds of seniority, length of service and compassion is laughable to say the least and derogatory to the foreign service tradition.
Someone was even quoted as having said that although she could not answer questions, she looked good and charming. Ha ha. When did confirmation hearings become beauty parades? It is a pity she is said to be a career diplomat. Career diplomats in this country have often complained about how they have been short-changed by the tendency to appoint politicians to foreign missions. Over the years, they have been inconsolable. If Mrs Bristol represents the senior career diplomatic cadre, then there is a very serious crisis facing the country. Diplomats in other countries are exposed to special training including studies in language, etiquette, intelligence gathering, issues articulation and general country knowledge. By the time they are sent abroad, they represent in part the best that their countries can offer. As in every other sector of national life, Nigeria enjoys sending its second and third eleven to the public space, local and international. Mamora is right: "we cannot continue to allow mediocrity." David Mark is wrong: this is not a case of "poor pass", this is a case of getting a job without a clue – the Ijeoma Bristol model! It reveals the poor state of leadership in Nigeria and a confirmation of the malaise that has diminished the country's education sector.

If the truth be told however, Mrs Bristol is not the first person appearing at the Senate Confirmation hearing who is unable to recite the Nigerian national anthem. The level of ignorance in this country is astounding particularly among public officials. Most of them do not read newspapers; they cannot read or write speeches and books, they do not listen to local and foreign news. They have no passion for Nigeria. They do not love their country enough. Asking a nominee to recite the national anthem may not be the best way to judge the person's level of patriotism but the reality is that there is a serious disconnection between the people and the country. Ironically, the same Nigerians who know nothing about Nigeria may be very knowledgeable about other countries.

Ask them to name five states in the United States and their capitals: they won't disappoint. Many Nigerians know Martin Luther King and J. F. Kennedy, but they may never have heard of Herbert Macaulay. They know who Lady Diana is but they may not have any idea who Queen Amina is. They know where Delaware is, but they have never heard of Dutse. Our education system does not prepare Nigerians to pay attention to history, culture and civics, and other significant details about their country. But we should not over-flog Mrs Bristol. The same Senators who were laughing at Mrs Bristol's expense would probably fail the same test.

That shared quality of ignorance is much evident in the quality of questions that are asked at confirmation hearings in Nigeria. It is often the case of the dumb interviewing the ignorant; hollow rituals which often end up with confirmations or requests that the nominee should "take a bow" followed by applause from the lawmakers. That is the chief irony in the whole debacle- only third rate people can emerge from such a process. Where diplomats are involved, the process of nomination and confirmation must be reviewed. The list of nominees should indicate the country or countries for which the particular nominee is being proposed; that way the Senate Committee would be in a better position to ask specific and relevant questions.

Mrs Bristol, the ambassadorial nominee from Anambra state should be spared the additional difficulty of representing Nigeria abroad and going there to embarrass herself and the country. But this is Nigeria: don't be surprised if she is posted to London, Switzerland or Washington DC! Now here is the take-away: Mrs Bristol was asked to explain the Vienna and Geneva Conventions. All she could say was: "I am confused. I am confused." Those who endorsed her nomination should be ashamed and guilty of imposing this embarrassment on the nation. And Bristol? Is that a Nigerian name? Well, hear Kofi Busia: "diplomacy means the art of nearly deceiving all your friends, but not quite deceiving all your enemies." Or Thomas Pickering: "In archaeology you uncover the unknown. In diplomacy, you cover the known." But the truth is golden.

AUTHOR: REUBEN ABATI

Yes, the Internet is a Global Market, without regional restrictions. For instance, even before I finished publishing this article and made a little market test of this product online, I started getting ordering calls and requests from around on how to get the e-book on how to go about this business. It was the response I got from them that further motivated me to complete this article. Information is priceless. Go for it! Recently, I found out that what you need to make LEGIT CASH, from the internet Global Market is not having all the money in your hand, but just THE RIGHT INFORMATION in your hand. If you’re informed, you can’t be deformed. This old statement has global acceptance. Now back to business.

1.1. WHAT IS BULK SMS SYSTEM?
SMS is an abbreviation for “Short Message Sending” Bulk SMS system provides an easy and cost reduced platform for disseminating and communicating information from the internet to Mobile phones, instantly to hundreds and thousands of clients/contacts to different networks within and around the globe, with a flat price per SMS. Like you know society is stratified (divided) into groups- social, religious, secret, political, ideological, educational, business etc. groups; and with their ever-increasing aspirations to excel more than numerous counterparts will go extra miles for information products that will distinguish them from their pairs. This is the goal-target of the bulk SMS system information.

1.2. WHAT ARE THE FEATURES?
- ID Branding- Messages are sent with your preferred/customized name. e.g. Pastor Mary, Dr. Gideon, OPM Ministries, Excel Schools etc.
- Quick Delivery- Messages are delivered instantly (or as scheduled by you) to all network recipients (provided their network is available)
- Reduced/Flat Rate/Price- messages are sent at an agreed subsidized flat rate to all networks in any part of the globe.
- The Fastest way to communicate information to your contacts, locally and internationally.

1.3. HOW DOES IT WORK?
Its simple. Its simply SMS over the internet to mobile phones. You will need to subscribe/register with a Bulk SMS company within your area. Registration is usually free for some companies. However, when you register, for you to have enough SMS units (credits) to send messages, you’ll need to recharge your account with them. All these can be done online or even in their office. Also, different Bulk SMS firms have different prices per SMS (credit) unit, different amount units of SMS you can buy at once and all that. However, at the end of this report, if you’ll take the next bold step, I would have shown you the cheapest Bulk SMS firms around where you can buy each SMS unit (credit) as low as N2.00k, you can now decide for yourself how much you will Re-sell to your prospective clients.

1.4. HOW TO SEND BULK SMS MESSAGES
To start sending Bulk SMS, you need an internet access. You also need a recharged Bulk SMS account with your preferred units (credits). If the two requirements are met, then you can start sending bulk SMS messages to your numerous clients just with the click of the mouse.

1.5. HOW TO EARN N100, 000 MONTHLY FROM BULK SMS BUSINESS
The Bulk SMS market is very huge and new. Every society is stratified into groups- business, churches, schools, social groups, political groups, marriage ceremonies etc. Wait a minute; can you count the churches in your vicinity or your street? Can you count the public and private schools in your vicinity or area? Can you count the wedding ceremonies that take place every Fridays and Saturdays in your area? No you can’t count! New groups emerge everyday. This is the bulk SMS market. Now what if I show you where you will buy units units of SMS at N2.00k or below? Lets assume you start with 2000 units; that will be 2000 X 2.00k = N4, 000 (Cost Price, N4, 000). Now assuming you sell these 2000 units of SMS to a prospective client at the rate of N4.00k? That will be 2000 X 4.00k = N8, 000 (Selling Price, N8, 000). Now, to see your profit, deduct N8000 from N4, 000, = N4, 000. You can see that you’ve doubled your profit in just one sale. Please note that you can even decide to sell at N4.50k or even N5.00k per SMS. Now calculate your profit by only ten clients, in a week. That will be N4, 000 X 10= N40, 000. Yes N40, 000 for just ten clients, 2000 units of SMS and in one week. Calculate this amount by a month (4weeks) that will be N40, 000 X 4= N160, 000 in month! Remember, this profit will increase when you get more clients that buy more SMS units from you. So, from this analysis, you can see that you can make even more than N100, 000 in a month with this business.
Friend, I believe so much in opportunities, when they come by. The law of Supply states that opportunities are all around you; it depends on your ability to see them and act immediately. This report stands as eye-opener to you today. This business has made me become an employer of labour. Yes, if you follow the guides in my e-book, soon you will need to employ people to help you facilitate this business. Imagine if you have twenty to thirty clients, oops!

However, the second part of this report is compiled in my e-book titled- (The Bulk SMS System…..How to Earn At Least N100, 000 a Month (Proven)). In this e-book, you’ll be taken by the hand to meet with the cheapest Bulk SMS firms around your area, where you can buy SMS units even below N2.00k per SMS. Also, in the e-book you will be given proven strategies on how to get at least five clients subscribe under you! You’ll also be given a Re-Sell Right to Re-sell the e-book and make more money as am making too. Now how much will such a book that can generate you a N100,000 a month cost? Will N5,000 be too much? Well, I don’t think its too much for such a priceless information. Well, I will be giving out for a token. The first 20 persons to make order for this e-book will pay N1,000 only!

3.HOW TO OPERATE A GSM RECHARGE CARD PRINTING BUSINESS WITH OR WITHOUT COMPUTER,SOFTWARES ,ELECTRICITY OR PRINTER

Before now printing and selling of GSM vouchers has been a business reserved exclusively for the big distributors.
Just two years after our marriage, hubby brought up the idea of asking Mother to move from the rural hometown and spend her remaining years with us. Hubby's father passed away while he was still very young. Mother endured much hardship and struggled all on her own to provide for him, see him through to a university degree. You could say that she suffered a great deal and did everything you could expect of a woman to bring hubby to where he is today. I immediately agreed and started packing the spare room, which has a balcony facing the South to let her enjoy the sunshine and plant greenery. Hubby stood in the bright room, and suddenly just picked me up and started spinning round and round. As I begged him to put me down, he said: "Lets go fetch mother".

Hubby is tall and big sized and I love to test on his chest and enjoy the feeling that he could pick me up at any moment put the tiny me into his pockets. Whenever we have an argument and both refuses to back down, he would pick me up and spin me over his head continuously until I surrender and beg for mercy. I became addicted to this kind of panic-joy feeling.

Mother brought along her countryside habits and lifestyle with her. For example; I am so used to buying flowers to decorate the living room, she could not stand it and would comment: "I do not know how you young people spend your money, why do you buy flowers for? You also can't eat flowers!" I smiled and said: "Mum, with flowers in the house, our mood will also become better." Mother continues to grumble away, and hubby smiled: "Mum, this is a city-people’s habit; slowly you will get use to it". Mother stopped saying anything.

But every time thereafter, whenever came home with flowers, she would ask me how much it costs. I told her and she would shake her head and express displeasure. Sometimes, when I come home with lots of shopping bags, she would ask each and every item how much they cost, I would tell her honestly and she would get even more upset about it.. Hubby playfully pinched my nose and said: "You little fool, just don't tell her the full price of everything would solve it." There begins the friction to our otherwise happy lifestyle.

Mother hates it most when hubby wakes up early to prepare the breakfast. In your view, how could the man of the house cook for the wife? At the breakfast table, mother facial expression is always like the dark clouds before a thunderstorm and I would pretend not to notice. She would use her chopsticks and make a lot of noise with it as her silent protest. As I am a dance teacher in the Children's Palace and am exhausted from along day of dancing around, I do not wish to give up the luxury of that additional few minutes in the comfort of my bed and hence I turned a deaf ear to all the protest mother makes.

From time to time, mother would help out with some housework, but soon her help created additional work for me. For example: she would keep all kinds of plastic bags accumulating them so that she sell them later on, and resulted in our house being filled with all the trash bags; she would scrimp on dish washing detergent when helping to wash the dishes and so as not to hurt her feelings, I would quietly wash them again. One day, late at night, mother saw me quietly washing the dishes, and "Bam" she slams her bedroom door and cried very loudly in her room. Hubby was placed in a difficult position, and after that, he did not speak to me for that entire night. I pretended to be a spoilt child, tried acting cute, but he totally ignored me.... I got mad and asked him: "What did I do wrong?" Hubby stared at me and said: "Can't you just give in to her once? We couldn't possibly die eating from a bowl however unclean it is, right?" After that incident, for a long period of time, mother did not speak to me and you can feel that there is a very awkward feeling hanging in the house.

During that period of cold war, hubby was caught in dilemma as to who to please. In order to stop her son from having to prepare breakfast, mother took on the "all important" task of preparing breakfast without any prompting. At the breakfast table, mother would look at hubby happily eating his breakfast and cast that reprimanding stare at me for having failed to perform my duty as a wife. To avoid the embarrassing breakfast situation, I resorted to buying my own breakfast on my way to work. That night, while in bed, hubby was a little upset and asked me: "LD, is it because you think that mum's cooking is not clean that's why you chose not to eat at home?" He then turned his back on me and left me alone in tears as feeling of unfairness overwhelmed me.. After some time, hubby sighed: "LD, just for me, can you have breakfast at home?" I am left with no choice but to return to the breakfast table.

The next morning, I was having porridge prepared by mother and I felt a sudden churn in my stomach and everything inside seem to be rushing up my throat. I tried to suppress the urge to throw up but I could not. I threw down the bowl, rushed into the washroom, and vomited everything out. Just as I was catching my breath, I saw mother crying and grumbling very loudly in her dialect, hubby was standing at the washroom doorway staring at me with fire burning in his eyes... I opened my mouth but no words came out of it, I really did not mean it.

We had our very first big fight that day; mother took a look at us, then stood up and slowly made her way out of the house. Hubby gave me a final stare in the eye and followed mother down the stairs. For three days, hubby did not return home, not even a phone call. I was so furious, since mother arrived; I had been trying my best and putting up with her, what else do you want me to do? For no reason, I keep having the feeling to throw up and I simply have not appetite for food, coupled with all the events happening at home, I was at then low point in my life. Finally, a colleague said: "LD, you look terrible; you should go and see a doctor." The doctor confirmed that I am pregnant.

Now it became clear to me why I threw up that fateful morning, a sense of sadness floated through that otherwise happy news. Why didn't hubby, and mother who had been through this before, thought of the possibility of this being the reason that day? At the hospital entrance, I saw my hubby standing there. It had only been three days, but he looked haggard. I had wanted

To turn and leave, but one look at him and my heart soften, I couldn't resist and called out to him. He followed my voice and finally found me but he pretended that he doesn't know me; he has that disgusted look in his eyes that cut right through my heart. I told myself not to look at him anymore, and hail a cab. At that moment, I have such a strong urge inside me to shout to my hubby: "Darling, I am having your baby!" and have him lift me up and spin me around in circles of joy. What I wanted didn't happen and as I sat in the cab, my tears started rolling down. Why? Why our love couldn't even withstand the test of one fight?

Back home, I lay on the bed thinking about my hubby, and the disgusted look in his eyes. I cried and wet the corner of the blanket. That night, sound of the drawers opening woke me up. I switched on the lights and I saw hubby with tears rolling down his face. He was removing the money. I stared at him in silence; he ignored me, took the bank deposit book and some money and left the house. Maybe he really intends to leave me for good. What a rational man, so clear-cut in love and money matters. I gave a few dried laugh and tears starting streaming down again.

The next day, I did not go to work.. I wanted to clear this out and have a good talk with hubby. I reached his office and his secretary gave me a weird look and said: "Mr. Tan's mother had a traffic accident and is now in the hospital." I stood there in shock. I rushed to the hospital and by the time I found hubby, mother had already passed away. Hubby did not look at me, His face was expressionless. I looked at mother's pale white and thin face and I couldn't control the tears in my eyes. My god, how could this happen?

Throughout the funeral, hubby did not say a single word to me, with only the occasional disgusted stare at me. I only managed to find out brief facts about the accident from other people. That day, after mother left the house, she walked in dazed toward the bus stop, apparently intending to go back to her old house back in the countryside. As hubby ran after her, she tried to walk faster and as she tried to cross the street, a public bus came and hit her... I finally understood how much hubby must hate me, if I had not thrown up that morning, if we had not quarreled, if.... In his heart, I am indirectly the killer of his mother.

Hubby moved into mother's room and came home every night with a strong liquor smell on him. And me, I am buried under the guilt and self-pity and could hardly breathe. I wanted to explain to him, tell him that we are going to have our baby soon, but each time, I saw the dead look in his eyes, all the words I have at the brink of my mouth just fell back in. I had rather he hit me real hard or give me a big and thorough scolding though none of these events happening had been my fault at all.

Many days of suffocating silence went by and as the days went by, hubby came home later and later. The deadlock between us continues, we were living together like strangers who don't know each other. I am like the dead knot in his heart. One day, I passed by a western restaurant, looking into the glass window, I saw hubby and a girl sitting facing each other and he very lightly brushed her hair for her, I understood what it meant. After recovering from that moment of shock, I entered the restaurant, stood in front of my hubby and stared hard at him, not a tear in my eyes. I have nothing to say to him, and there is no need to say anything. The girl looked at me, looks at hubby, stands up and wanted to go, hubby stretched out his hand and stopped her. He stared back at me, challenging me.. I can only hear my slow heart beat, beating, one by one as if at the brink of death. I eventually backed down, if I had stood that any longer, I will collapse
together with the baby inside me. That night, he did not come home; he had chosen to use that as a way to indicate to me: Following mother's death so did our love for each other.

He did not come home anymore after that. Sometimes, when I returned home from work, I can tell that the cupboard had been touched - he had returned to take some of his stuff.. I no longer wish to call him; the initial desire to explain everything to him vanished. I lived alone; I go for my medical checkups alone, my heart breaks again and again every time I see a guy carefully helping his wife through the physical examination. My office colleagues hinted to me to consider aborting the baby, I told them No, I will not.. I insisted on having to this baby, perhaps it is my way of repaying mother for causing her death.

One day, I came home and I saw hubby sitting in the living room. The whole house was filled with cigarette smoke. On the coffee table, there was this piece of paper. I know what it is all about without even looking at it. In the two months plus of living alone, I have gradually learned to find peace within myself. I looked at him, removed my hat and said: "You wait a while, I will sign." He looked at me, mixed feelings in his eyes, just like mine. As I hang up my coat, I keep repeating to myself "You cannot cry, you cannot cry..." my eyes hurt terribly, but I refused to let tears come out from there. After I hung up my coat, hubby's eyes stared fixed at my bulging tummy. I smiled, walked over to the coffee table and pulled the paper towards me. Without even looking at what it says, I signed my name on it and pushed the paper to him. "LD, are you pregnant?" Since mother's accident, this is the first time he spoke to me. I could not control my tears any further and they fell like raindrops. I said: "Yes, but its ok, you can leave now." He did not go, in the dark, we sat, facing each other. Hubby slowly moved over me, his tears wet the blanket. In my heart, everything seems so far away, so far that even if I sprint, I could never reach them. I cannot remember how many times he repeated "sorry" to me. I had originally thought that I would forgive him, but now I can't. In the western restaurant, in front of that girl, that cold look in his eyes, I will never forget, ever. We have drawn such deep scars in each other's heart. For me, it's unintentional; for him, totally intentional. I had been waiting for this moment of reconciliation, but I realized now, what had gone past is gone forever and could not repeated.

Other than the thought of the baby inside me that would bring some warmth to my heart, I am totally cold towards him, I no longer eat anything he buys for me, I don't take any presents from him and I stopped talking to him. From the moment I signed on that piece of paper, marriage and love had vanished from my heart. Sometimes, hubby will try to come into the bedroom, but when he walks in, I will walk out to the living room. He had no choice but to sleep in mother's room. At night, from his room, I can hear light sounds of groaning, I kept quiet... This used to be his trick; last time, whenever I ignore him, he would fake illness and I will surrender and find out what is wrong with him, he would then grab me and laugh. He has forgotten that last time I cared for him and am concerned because there was love, but now, what is there between us? Hubby's groaning came on and off continuing but I continuously ignored him.

Almost everyday, he would buy something for the baby, infant products, children products and books that kids like to read. Bags and bags of it stacked inside his room till it is full. I know he is trying to use this to reach out to me, but I am no longer moved by his actions. He has no choice but to lock himself in his room and I can hear his typing away on his computer keyboard, maybe he is now addicted to web surfing but none of that matters to me anymore.

It was sometime towards the end of spring in the following year, one late night, I screamed because of a sudden stomach pain, hubby came rushing into the room, its like he did not change and sleep, and had been waiting for this moment. He carried me and ran down the stairs, stopped a car, holding my hand very tightly and kept wiping the sweat off my brow, throughout the journey to the hospital. Once we reached the hospital, he carried me and hurried into the delivery suite. Lying on the back of his skinny but warmth body, a thought crossed my mind: In my lifetime, who else would love me as much as he did?

He held the delivery suite door opened and watch me go in; his warm eyes caused me to manage a smile at him despite my contraction pain. Coming out of the delivery room, hubby looked at our son and me, eyes tear with joy and he kept smiling. I reached out and touched his hand. Hubby looked at me, smiling and then he slowly collapsed onto the floor. I cried out for him in pain... He smiled, but without opening that tired eyes of his.... I had thought that I would never shed any tear for him, but the truth is, I have never felt a deeper pain cutting through my body at that moment. Doctor said that by the time hubby discovered he had liver cancer, it was already in terminal stage and it was a miracle that he managed to last this long. I asked the doctor when he first discovered he had cancer. Doctor said about 5 months ago and consoled me saying: "Prepare for his funeral."

I disregarded the nurse's objection and rushed home, I went into his room and checked his computer, and a suffocating pain hits me. Hubby's cancer was discovered 5 months ago, his groaning was real, and I had thought that... the computer showed over 200 thousand words he wrote for our son: "Son, just for you, I have persisted, to be able to take a look at you before I fall, is my biggest wish now.... I know that in your life, you will have many happiness and maybe some setbacks, if only I can accompany you throughout that journey, how nice would it be. But daddy now no longer has that chance. Daddy has written inside here all the possible difficulties and problems you may encounter during your lifetime, when you meet with these problems, you can refer to daddy's suggestion ... Son, after writing these 200 thousand words, I feel as if I have accompanied you through life journey. To be honest, daddy is very happy. Do love your mother, she has suffered, she is the one who loves you most and also the one who loves me most...." From play school to primary school, to secondary, university, to work and even in dealing with questions of love, everything big and small was written there.

Hubby has also written a letter for me: "My dear, to marry you is my biggest happiness, forgive me for the pain I have caused you, forgive me for not telling you my illness, because I want to see you be in a joyful mood waiting for the arrival of our baby.... My dear, if you cried, it means that you have forgiven me and I would smile, thank you for loving me... These presents, I'm afraid I cannot give them to our son personally, could you help me to give some of them to him every year, the dates on what to give when are all written on the packaging... "

Going back to the hospital, hubby is still in coma. I brought our son over and place him beside him. I said: "Open your eyes and smile, I want our son to remember being in the warmth of your arms..." He struggled to open his eyes and managed a weak smile. Our son still in his arms was happily waving his tiny hands in the air. I press the button on the camera and the sound of the shutter rang through the air as tears slowly rolled down my face.... A fatal misunderstanding and the person who loves me the most in this world is gone forever...." Cruel misunderstandings one after another disrupted the blissful footsteps to our family. Our originals intend of having Mother enjoy some quiet and peaceful moments in her remaining years with us went terribly wrong as destiny's secret is finally revealed at a price, everything became too late."......

Unconfirmed reports said the two young men did not declare the content of the bag before they boarded the plane in Kano.

It was learnt that the suspects, who claimed they were operators of a Bureau de Change outlet, were given the money by their customers.

A police source quoted the suspects as saying that they were in Lagos to sell the foreign currencies because the exchange rates were usually higher in Lagos.

The case had been handed over to the Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department of the Nigerian Police Force, Abuja for further investigation, according to a police source.

The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Mr. Moses Onireti, told SATURDAY PUNCH that he was in a meeting when a call was put through his telephone line for reaction.

When our correspondent called the police commissioner around 8.20 pm for the second time on the incident, he said, “call back.”

In 2010, an official in one of the commercial banks claimed she lost an undisclosed amount in foreign currency between Lagos and Abuja, which she said she checked in on an Arik flight.

It was lost in transit between Lagos and Abuja.

SOURCE: http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201102055355759

Billions of dollars and political reputations are at stake as the ruling class battles it out. Businesses plot with politicians for supremacy ahead of...

Billions of dollars and political reputations are at stake as the ruling class battles it out. Businesses plot with politicians for supremacy ahead of the 2011 elections.

As President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s four-year mandate approaches its critical mid-point in April, Nigeria’s political and business clans are already busy forging alliances, repairing damaged relationships and seeing off challengers to their power bases. With the country’s next round of elections due in April 2011, there is everything to play for in the intervening two years as the parties try to gather resources at a time of economic downturn. The politicians are developing new campaigns and rebuilding old friendships.

Survivors from times past are circling the arena like gladiators, skilfully dodging each others’ blows. They are always looking for the chance to recruit new acolytes or, in some of the most prominent cases, to promote the interests of their own close relatives.

If a poll were to be conducted on who Nigerians think are the most influential and powerful players in their country’s political arena, those at the top of the list would have to include former military president General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, current President Umaru Yar’Adua, his immediate predecessor (and former military ruler) Olusegun Obasanjo, former vice-president Atiku Abubakar and one-time senator Olusola Saraki. Others would be former army chief General Theophilus Danjuma, former military head of state General Muhammadu Buhari and, perhaps at the head of the younger generation on the list, the business mogul Aliko Dangote.

The Long Yar'Adua legacy

The Presidential family has a
political history. Read more.

Yar’Adua’s poor health has kept him away from Abuja on several critical occasions in the past two years, and this has fed speculation about the possibility of finding a successor from within his own close family dynasty. The Yar’Aduas are a quintessentially political family whose influence dates back at least three generations to the colonial foundations of Nigeria, shining most brightly in the president’s late brother, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, who was murdered in prison in 1997 by agents of the late dictator, General Sani Abacha.

With the president himself often out of action, at least some of his power is apparently exercised by his wife, Turai Yar’Adua, widely regarded as the most influential first lady since Maryam Babangida. Some suggest the family may even be considering passing the torch to either one of the couple’s sons-in-law, both of whom are serving governors of northern states. One of the presidential daughters is married to the governor of Kebbi State, Saidu Usman Nasamu Dakingari, and another is married to the governor of Bauchi State, Malam Isa Yuguda.

The pdp barons patch up

If indeed the first family does harbour such plans, they are bound to come up against serious opposition. Already, former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, who became a close political and business associate of Shehu Yar’Adua during and after Babangida’s transition programme of the early 1990s, is making moves to return to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Atiku was a founding member of the PDP, but he was forced out as a result of the vicious battle for control of it between himself and Obasanjo in the run-up to the 2007 general election.

In December 2008, Atiku paid a surprise visit to Obasanjo at his Ota farm in Ogun State. This in turn produced serious divisions in the Action Congress, which Atiku founded after he was hounded out of the PDP. His visit to Obasanjo, who is said to be unhappy with Yar’Adua because of his reversal of earlier policies and programmes, is now widely regarded as a move by both to scuttle anyone from the presidential camp from getting the PDP ticket for the 2011 election in the event that the president’s health fails him.

Although in the 1999 elections Atiku won the governorship primary election in his native Adamawa State and eventually won the governorship election itself, he never served as governor. Instead, Obasanjo picked him as his running mate for the subsequent presidential elections. But their relationship broke down in the face of Obasanjo’s attempt to secure a third term ahead of the 2007 election. Not only did the vice-president lead the successful opposition to Obasanjo’s ‘third term’ re-election project, he mounted a propaganda campaign against Obasanjo’s attempt to paint him as a corrupt and unworthy of becoming the country’s leader.

Rivalry abounds

Atiku would not be the only source of rivalry for Yar’Adua or for any of his allies who might hope to get the presidential ticket. Also waiting in the wings is the formidable family of Olusola Saraki, a medical doctor, senate leader in the Second Republic and a powerful aristocrat in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Saraki first came into the limelight as a prominent member of the constituent assembly which wrote the 1979 constitution that changed Nigeria from a parliamentary democracy into a presidential one. Later he became a founding member of the National Party of Nigeria, which won the presidential election of 1979 that ushered in the Second Republic under President Shehu Shagari. Since that time, the four civilian governors of the state have been his political godsons, as have been most of those from Kwara appointed as federal ministers.

In the last governorship election in 2007, Saraki set a record in Nigeria by installing his own son, Bukola, also a medical doctor, as governor of Kwara. Earlier, he had installed his daughter, Gbemisola, as one of three senators from Kwara. Gbemisola is also close to the first lady. Another son, Olaolu, is a special assistant in the presidency, while Governor Bukola Saraki is currently the chairman of the Governors’ Forum and also close to the president. A Saraki godson, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, is the secretary-general of the PDP. With such a formidable presence in the presidency and the party, and with his daughter in the Senate, many speculate that Olusola Saraki is positioning Bukola to become the country’s president, and perhaps as soon as 2011.

Federal Business in Abuja

'Federal character' abounds
in Nigeria's boardrooms.

Opposition to Yar’Adua’s second term will come not only from within the PDP, to which Babangida, Yar’Adua and Saraki all belong, but naturally enough, the other parties too. Right now, however, such opposition seems extremely weak. The biggest opposition party, the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), has been in disarray since its former candidate Buhari opposed taking part in the PDP’s so-called government of national unity. The party hierarchy had, on the other hand, endorsed it. In the 2007 general elections, the ANPP lost to the PDP several of the state governorships and seats in the National Assembly that it had held in 2003. Since then, two of its governors, those of Zamfara and Kebbi States, have defected to the PDP. There is speculation that the governors of Bauchi (who recently became the president’s son-in-law) and Borno may join the PDP ahead of the 2011 general elections. With the ANPP deeply divided, it is difficult to see how Buhari can mount a formidable, never mind successful, campaign against the PDP in 2011.

Buhari entered civilian politics halfway through Obasanjo’s first term as elected president (1999-2003). His previous disdain for politics was not surprising given his treatment of politicians during his 20 months as military head of state beginning in December 1983. However, his political career has not been a roaring success. Not only did he suffer defeat twice as the presidential candidate for the ANPP, but his party is now in just as much disarray as all the other opposition parties.

Men in camouflage

Apart from Atiku, the Sarakis and Buhari, opposition to Yar’Adua’s second term is likely to also come from General Theophilus Danjuma, one of the most influential chiefs the country has had. Danjuma, along with General Obasanjo, was on the list of people that the February 1976 coup-makers had planned to eliminate. Whereas Obasanjo went into hiding in the immediate aftermath of the coup attempt, Danjuma mobilised the troops that remained loyal to neutralise the coup. He was therefore in a position to declare himself head of state. Instead, he and the then-inspector-general of police, Alhaji M.D. Yusuf, persuaded Obasanjo to put himself forward as head of state.

Danjuma was a major financial and moral supporter of Obasanjo’s presidential ticket for the PDP – the northern establishment, at the initiative of Babangida and General Aliyu Mohammed, a one-time army chief and long serving intelligence officer decided that a southerner, more specifically a Yoruba from the south-west, should be the country’s next elected leader. This move was apparently meant to assuage Yoruba ill-feeling over Babangida’s cancellation of the June 1993 presidential election, the putative winner of which was the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, a Yoruba.

Obasanjo remained grateful to Danjuma at least until his second term began in 2003, when they fell out over a range of policy issues. On one occasion Danjuma publicly condemned Obasanjo’s government as one controlled by ‘a cult’. Now, Danjuma has become one of President Yar’Adua loudest critics. After nearly two years of little action by the president, Danjuma criticised it as a ‘standstill’ administration.

Obasanjo’s position is particularly ambiguous. Having steered Yar’Adua’s nomination through the gauntlet of PDP barons three years ago, he soon found he and his family had become the target of a vendetta from rivals within the party after he had left office in May 2007. Within weeks, stories emerged in the press about how he had misused his network of contacts for personal gain; some suggested more misappropriation than his predecessors, Babangida and Abacha.

Family trees

Obasanjo’s daughter and senator, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, remains her father’s favourite. Obasanjo Holdings is the family business and Iyabo is an executive director. It claims to be Nigeria’s leading agricultural company, but it is also a holding company for many other interests like those in Tempo Food and Packaging and in banks such as the former First Interstates Merchant Bank (now part of Unity Bank). Obasanjo has a stake in Sahara Energy, led by Tope Shonubi, and Transcorp (owner of the Abuja Hilton). Other Obasanjo investments include stakes in NITEL (the former state telecoms company, which is now privatised), and Dangote Holdings as well as substantial property holdings in Abuja and Lagos.

The high cost of Nigeria’s presidential political system seems to have made some Nigerian businessmen into important players. Few have achieved the prominence of Aliko Dangote, the young billionaire from Kano State, who has made substantial donations to the election campaigns of presidents, governors and other elected officials. In return, he has reaped huge financial rewards from the award of oil blocks, the purchase of privatised government companies and concessions in manufacturing companies. Dangote now sits on top of the country’s biggest trading and manufacturing empire, with interests in commodity trading, cement manufacturing and oil production.

Some dynasties have deep roots. Since government contracts and patronage dominate business in Nigeria, that gives a built-in advantage to those in office and their commercial networks. The elite is by no means immune to the entry of newcomers whose ill-gotten wealth has bought them prominence, but the networks thrive on long-standing social links across ethnic boundaries.

Big names, big men

Oba Okunade Sijuade, the Oni of Ife, is no gate-crasher but the ancestral father of the entire Yoruba ethnic group of western Nigeria. He is a highly respected king, said to be descended from the mythological Oduduwa. His business partner and trusted confidant for over four decades has been the emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, a northern oligarch if ever there was one. Their companies now lift crude oil jointly; they have also passed on the tradition, as Princes Tokunbo Sijuade and Nasir Ado Bayero are bosom business partners too. Similarly, Centrica is a company associated with both Okunade Sijuade and Edmund Daukoru, the Nembe king from the Delta, who happened to be oil minister in the last administration.

The most obvious route to the upper echelons of Nigerian society has been through the top schools, mostly on the English ‘public school’ model, like King’s College in Lagos, Barewa College in Zaria, Christ’s School in Ado Ekiti and Government College in Ibadan. These have now produced several generations of Nigerian rulers, top civil servants and senior professionals. These institutions take Nigerians from all ethnic groups and train them to become the new elites. This helps them to band together when their personal interests are at stake and to use ethnic alliances to achieve their aims.

And yet, as can be seen from the large number of former military officers in the political hierarchy, it is often the soldiers who have been the most adept at manoeuvring through the thickets of society – capitalising on the fact that it was they who ruled Nigeria for 28 of its 48 years as an independent country to date. After serving in the military, senior officers have ended up on the boards of banks and oil and gas companies, before moving on to become either emirs or traditional rulers, though some were already princes before even going into the military. Oba Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland, an influential monarch, was a colonel in the army and now sits on the board of oil company Oando.
Nigeria’s elites have always known how to close ranks and take care of themselves across the country’s ethnic borders. Whatever may happen at the top of the political parties, the ruling class survives. The top professionals in business and academia, the businessmen, the military class and traditional rulers are invariably woven together in a grand alliance to continue to dominate the upper reaches of the Nigerian economy.

Source: http://www.theafricareport.com/archives2/frontlines/3279007-nigerias-family-wars.html

10 Signs A Woman May Have Character Problems"

Here are 10 signs a woman may have
character problems.

1) She falls in love WAY too fast.

When a woman advances WAY faster than most
women do, watch out. It may not mean you're "lucky",
it may just mean you're dealing with a psycho. Watch
out for her either dominating your life completely or
falling out of love with you just as fast.

2) She treats her family badly,

Watch out for women who treat their family
members badly or say bad things about them. Eventually
she'll treat you that way too.

3) She likes to blame the world.

If a woman blames the world for everything
that happens to her instead of taking responsibility
for her ouw actions, you can be sure there'll be LOTS of
drama in your life if you start dating her.

4) She's on drugs. and smokes

Drugs are bad and will mess up a woman's
mind and body, period. I can understand college
kids smoking weed (though even that is debatable),
but anything beyond that is just BAD for you.

5) She's an alcoholic.

In the past I have been flamed by readers
for my advice on avoiding alcoholics. To all you
alcoholic-lovers out there, I am sorry to offend you
but I still stand by what I believe in. It's okay to
date an ex-alcoholic who's been clean for a few years,
but it is NOT okay to date a woman (or man) who is
still an alcoholic.

6) She hangs out with the wrong crowd.

As I have mentioned in the past, you can
often judge a person's character by looking at their
choice of friends. So if your new girlfriend hangs
around with the wrong crowd, watch out.

7) She plays mind games from the start.

If you can "sense" a woman is playing
mind games with you, chances are, she is.

Stay away, or there'll be a lot of
drama and hurt feelings, potentially on BOTH
sides!

Her income and living space do not
justify the lifestyle she has.

A little surprised that she can afford
all the nice clothes and makeup when she lives
in a hole or works at a coffee shop? It's a sign
that she's a gold digger and has at least one
other man out there who is supporting her.

Always be cautious about women who
lifestyles do not match with their income or
home. Even if she is NOT a gold digger, you
don't want a woman who maxes out your credit
on handbags and fancy gowns when you
get married. (Yes - there are many people
out there who live on credit. NOT good!)

9) Her stories don't match up.

Do her stories seem to not match up?
Watch out? She could be a chronic liar.

When dealing with liars and cheaters,
follow my two-strike rule. First time, you
let her off with a warning. Second time, it's
over!

10) Your friends tell you there are
things wrong with the woman.

Friends are usually less-biased than
you are since they are not in love with your
girl. If everybody starts telling you how they
think your new girlfriend is a slut or a
manipulative naughty woman, it's time to take a step back
and see why they feel that way.

Shut up! Nigerians

For some time now, I have been wondering why Nigerians are so loud and hypocritical. Why are Nigerians show people? Why are we always making a noise of everything we have to do? Why are we just down to earth controversial?

I was still wondering in my wilderness of thought when I remembered a book I read long ago titled The Complete Nigerian by the famed journalist Peter Enahohro alias Peter Pan. In his book (which should have been a best- seller if it were for a developed society), he clearly described a true Nigerian and I remember loudness, being full of mischief and hypocritical as part of the many characteristics of a complete Nigerian in that book.

Why then have I been wondering about the loudness and of Nigerians? Why is it becoming a source of worry and concern all of a sudden? It is because for sometime noe is has been assuming a dangerous dimension that if not checked can cause devastation beyond a manageable proportion.

After the last gubernatorial and presidential polls in April 2007, many Nigerians during and after the elections were ragging about the conduct of the elections with particular emphasis on the snatching and stuffing of ballot boxes, harassment and intimidation of voters, falsification of election results, incompetence of INEC staff etc.

The noise and the outcry was so so loud that it was getting to me. I decided then to write a piece for publication titled Shut Up Nigerians, Shut Up! The write up never saw the light of the press as it was misplaced, so how. In the write- up, I asked serious questions about all the noise and hullabaloo being made about the conduct of the polls.

I sought to know why ballot boxes should not be snatched and stuffed with illegally thump printed ballot papers. I also sought for answers as to why voters should not be harassed and intimidated by thugs who were hired, armed and paid by the very people contesting for their votes. I asked why in heavens name should INEC not have incompetent people in its employ. I wasnt expecting answers from any quarters because I had ready- made answers.
Everyday of our lives as Nigerians, these are characteristics we display, thats why. Are we not thieves that snatch things meant for other people everyday? Do we not as politicians and civil servant take funds meant for millions of Nigerians with respect to projects execution? Do we not in our exalted positions snatch jobs meant for those who deserve and merit them for our close acquaintances? Do we not shamelessly connive to take monies meant for pensioners and stash them up in a fixed deposit account so it can yield interests for our benefits while the old people wait and die waiting? Do we not deny people we know admission into the University for those we know or have paid us?

Do we not falsify the number of workers on especially government pay- roll so as to benefit from the monies accruing to the ghost workers? Do we not sexually harass females in schools, places of work, and on the street? Is crime not a part of our lives? Are the criminals not our brothers and sisters? Why wont there be incompetent people wearing INEC uniform when we all close our eyes and allow people get away with examination fraud and have their results released with excellent grades they are never able to defend?

Recently, after the Boko Haram crises, another period of shameless noise making began. I was however very pleased with Mr. Femi Falanas blunt stand on this noise- making issue when he was a guest on Gbenga Arulebas popular TV programme, Focus Nigeria. He decried the hypocrisy on the part of the government and the press over the issue and went on to back his stand.

Lets be objective, is Boko Haram the first case of extra- judicial killings in Nigeria? Why all the hype? What about the Apo Six in Abuja and the countless of these type of cases of senseless killings in Nigeria everyday? What about the case of the young man in Kwara State who arrived Nigeria from the USA only a few days before the bullet of a policemans gun made sure he never returned to the US? What about the polytechnic student that was killed by a policeman when the okada rider he was riding on refused to stop and give the now normal handouts of twenty naira? What about the four people killed in a golf car by policeman in Abuja? The list is endless. Extra- judicial killings now seem to be part of the training now given at the police academy.

What has sparked me into writing about these noise and hypocrisy at this time? It is the noise being generated by about our U- 17 National team, the Golden Eaglets. What about? Over- aged players in the camp. So whats the reaction? As usual, a lot of hypocritical mumbo jumbo in the print and electronic media. A whole lot of criticisms have been flying around as some people have even asked for the players to be prosecuted.

What a shame! Have our civil service and banks especially not legalized the falsification of age? How many people in Nigeria have their original birth certificates? Have we not all been parading with certificates of declaration of age albeit sworn falsely under oath of the courts? How often do we see corps members that are evidently over the stipulated 30 year age mark? How in heavens do we think young Nigerians will not enter for the cadre competition with falsified ages? He who has not sinned in this issue should cast the first stone.

Before I knock off this write- up, let me disabuse your mind from thinking that I am in any way supporting these vices. I am so much against all of them but at the same time against the indiscriminate and outrageous noise and hypocrisy that normally dot them. Lets speak objectively every time we have to talk.
